Mumbai. Pankaj Tripathi, who tickled audiences like ‘Stree’, ‘Luka Chuppi’ and ‘English Medium’, is spending time at his home in Mud Island these days. They are taking this time of lockdown positively. Meanwhile, he spoke to writer and TV journalist Piyush Pandey. According to him, in 1993, he went to jail for 7 days and it was from here that his life changed. You too read Pankaj’s mind…
These days the whole country is at war with an invisible enemy. A virus that is not even visible. Sometimes I wonder what Turram Khan countries have achieved by making big atom bombs, missiles, tanks? When we cannot kill even a virus. Imprisonment is just one way to fight this virus. Capture indoors. But, to be honest, imprisonment has its own importance. You do some new experiments in seclusion, also find answers to some new questions.
On the other hand, once I got out of this lockdown prison, I also ate seven days of jail air. In 1993, two students were killed in the Madhubani shootout. In protest against this, the students organized a movement in the month of December. I was then a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, but not only the student council but also students of leftist organizations in jail. Discussions were held on different issues from him. I knew Nagarjuna’s poems while living with him. Big stories of some other writers were discussed.
There was not much exposure outside the village, so there was not much exposure. However, those seven days of jail ignited a new sense of literature and theater within me. After getting out of jail, the process of teaching and teaching started. In jail, some fellow said that I went to see such and such a play after jail. Although, I did a couple of plays in the village, but he was the father of the play Amcheyor. We did not even remember the dialog in them. But then when I joined the theater in Patna, the initial things of theater were understood.
I think today if I had not been jailed for seven days, would I have been what I am today. Do not know !! So don’t worry if you are locked in the house today. Read well, see well. The daughter is happy when I have time with family. You may be surprised that I have now seen the ‘Mirzapur’ web series. My house is in Mud Island, so I see the setting sun in the evening. Living close to nature, watching life closely. ‘
