Sony Music Entertainment on Friday announced the appointment of Rajat Kakkar as the Managing Director of Sony Music India. Rajat will take over the reins in Mumbai and will report to Sridhar Subramaniam, President of Sony Music Entertainment, Strategy and Market Development, Asia and the Middle East.

Rajat will take over the reins of the company strategy and focus on the growth of his company in leading markets like Bollywood, Punjabi and South Indian music industry.

Announcing this, Sridhar Subramaniam says, “We hope that in the next three years Sony Music will be able to make a name for itself in the list of India’s top ten music companies.” Rajat is an experienced entertainment executive who will take Sony Music to a new level of success through his strategies across the country.

Kakkar will be tasked with further developing the company’s Artist roster, promoting their participation and investment, and covering their seven different languages ​​at Sony Music’s three regional offices.

Prior to this, Kakkar served as the CEO and Managing Director of Phonographic Performance Limited from January 2018 to April 2020.

Kakkar’s career in the music industry began in 1996 at Sony Music India where he worked for six years. He worked as a sales director of Sony Music India Company in its early days. In 2002, he joined Universal Music India as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, becoming Managing Director in 2003. Kakkar worked at Procter & Gamble from 1991 to 1996, before joining the music industry. He has an MBA in Marketing from University Business School, Chandigarh.
