Alok Chatterjee has said all the things written below. on the phone. He is the director of Madhya Pradesh School of Drama. Currently in Bhopal. Irfan is a friend when the two studied together at the National School of Drama from 1984 to 1987. When called, many times wept and wept amidst the talk. He said – I will not be able to speak, then took a few breaths and said – If it had not been a lockdown, I would have been in Mumbai now. Then he was silent and kept speaking. As he said…
… We studied together from 1984 to 87 at the National School of Drama (NSD). We played the lead in every drama for 3 years. Irrfan used to take acting very seriously. He was a serious and serious actor from the beginning. He spoke less, was popular with friends and specializes in laughing.
During an interview with NSD, he had said that FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) does not have an acting course yet, so I have come to NSD because I want to become an actor of cinema. I also want to become an actor of cinema, whose director should come to him after seeing his acting. This was his dream and he achieved this milestone in his life.
It is talked about when we were looking at the list of our selection in NSD. He was standing behind. I asked which dormitory are you in? He said that I am in number 5 dormitory. He asked me are you Muslim? I asked her, are you Bengali? So said that no, I am Muslim. I said that I am Bengali. This was our first interaction with NSD.
In the NSD, we remained together for three years, after that the contact remained. In 2005, when I went to Anupam Kher Sahab’s house in Mumbai, I also went to meet him. By then he had become a very big star, but met the same way he used to be in the days of NSD.
Three years ago, he had come to Bhopal for a newspaper program, at that time I met him personally. At that time, he was surrounded by 5-6 commandos in terms of security. I also asked, do I have to meet commandos to meet you? So said – these are a little for you.
Guess his simplicity and betrayal with the fact that I smoked cigarettes and he bidi. We drank tea together, ate almonds. Even before that he had come to Bhopal for the shooting of Doordarshan serial Salma Sultan 20 years ago, when he came home. About 10 years ago, the film Maqbool was also shot in Bhopal. Maqbool is based on Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. He asked me for an English copy of Macbeth, where I went to give it to him at the hotel.
It can be said that the process of meeting together continued. I know his wife (Sutapa Sikdar) very well and he also knew my wife Shobha very young, as we both had a very close relationship with their wives (then close friends). He had an affair from school. I was his kind messenger. I also went with the proposal of his love marriage.
Being a Bengali, he told me that you are a trustworthy man, go and talk to you. However, she married four-years after leaving NSD, probably in 1991–92. The reason for this may have been Mumbai’s Struggle. He had family ties. I also knew his mother. I have met his younger brother.
Initially, Struggle in Mumbai also did a lot. There was a six-hour job at the callcenter, the rest of the time the studio-directors searched. The first serial discovery of India got a break. It became the most popular star of television 8 years later. Then he got his first film. He probably entered cinema at the age of 42. And when it came, he worked with actors like Amitabh Bachchan to Tom Hanks.
Shared the screen with lead actress Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai. He was incomparable. He was not compared with anyone. He was the fourth man from NSD after Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Anupam Kher to make a mark in international cinema. Our batch was, our friend (Alok cried saying this). If there was no lockdown then he would have gone to Mumbai.
From the beginning, he considered Naseeruddin Shah very much. He believed that the realistic acting in films is done by Naseer Saheb. Man can be successful if you get good roles. She has the best performance in Paan Singh Tomar. He was drunk on his character. Hee was a king.
