- Bhattacharjee, who hails from Tezpur in Assam, urged Minister of State Hemant Biswa Sarma to include sanitary pads in the list of must-haves during the disaster.
- When these women are given a place in the relief camp, then there is no facility of sanitary pads for them.
According to the daily flood report published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on August 21, the floods in Assam have affected more than 56.9 lakh people in 30 districts. Along with all the problems of women surrounded by this flood, there is also a problem of not getting sanitary pads.
Activist Mayuri Bhattacharjee has started a Change.org petition to include sanitary pads in relief kits. More than 600 relief camps and national disaster response forces have been deployed for flood victims in Assam.
In these difficult circumstances, there is no facility of sanitary pads for women who need it every month. The absence of sanitary pads in flood relief kits is unfortunate for women.
Mayuri says, “I represent the lakhs of girls and women affected by the floods of Assam who are caught in the floods every year.” When flood water comes here, not even a single cloth of the house remains clean and dry.
When these women are given a place in the relief camp, then there is no facility of sanitary pads for them. Nor is there proper arrangement of toilets ”.
Bhattacharjee, who hails from Tezpur in Assam, has urged state minister Hemant Biswa Sarma to include sanitary pads in the list of must-haves during the disaster. She has also been constantly emailing the Minister of State. But Mayuri started this petition when there was no response.
Mayuri says “Periods do not stop due to floods. How long do we have to wait to include sanitary pads in the relief material list”?
