WhatsApp Update feature: WhatsApp has started identifying “legal” names of users who have launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based payment facility on its app. In many cases, it has been seen that some users using online payment systems have different profile names and different bank accounts. WhatsApp will also detect and show these names to people who receive payments through WhatsApp. The Meta-owned instant messaging app said the new move is a result of the UPI guidelines set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), aimed at preventing frauds.

To notify users about the new update, WhatsApp has started rolling out a notification in its app that contains a link to an FAQ detailing the legal name requirement.

The biggest advantage of this will be that when a user makes a payment through WhatsApp, he will be able to see the legal name of the UPI users to whom he is making the payment.

NPCI issued guidelines
Following the guidelines issued by NPCI, notifications have been started for users on both Android and iOS from the end of March. It appears as a new shortcut in the Help section of WhatsApp, named About UPI payments and legal name, which gives a link to the FAQ page. In this the question has been asked- The name associated with your bank account is the name that will be shared.

Typically, WhatsApp users have the option to choose any name up to 25 characters long that they want to use on the app. Users can also include emoji in their profile name to make themselves stand out. However, the new requirement has made it mandatory for the app to identify and share the real names of its users, as per their bank accounts.

According to WhatsApp, as per the UPI guidelines to prevent fraud, the name of the user will be shown to the payer during the transaction. WhatsApp UPI PIN shows the name of the users on the screen.

However other UPI based payment apps require correct details including their legal name at the time of signup.
